a lack of something necessary for completeness, adequacy, or perfection
A situation when the engineering data originating from a specific engineering discipline a) either do not correspond to defined specifications and requirements; or is in conflict with data from the same discipline or b) do not conform to the specifications, requirements or data concerning the same engineering object but produced within another discipline involved in a project.

A flaw in a component or system that can cause the component or system to fail to perform its required function, e.g. an incorrect statement or data definition. A defect, if encountered during execution, may cause a failure of the component or system.
